Tumakuru, August 9, 2024 — A special initiative to promote the direct sale of jackfruits was successfully organized at the JAS Toll Plaza in Kythasandra by ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Hirehalli. The event provided an invaluable platform for Tumakuru farmers to sell their fresh jackfruits directly to consumers, bypassing middlemen and maximizing their earnings.
The program was inaugurated by prominent dignitaries, including Dr. N. Loganandhan, Head of KVK Hirehalli, Dr. G. Karunakaran, Principal Scientist at the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), and Smt. Sharadamma, Deputy Director of Horticulture (DDH) for Tumakuru. The event was symbolically marked by the cutting of a ‘Siddu’ jackfruit, underscoring the importance of such direct farmer-to-consumer initiatives.
Local farmers, including Mr. Narashimhamurthy, Mr. Suresh, Mr. Madhu, Mr. Lokesh and Mr. Kumaraiah, actively participated in the event, expressing their satisfaction with the outcome. They were able to sell their jackfruit products swiftly and at fair prices, highlighting the success of the program in empowering local farmers.
This initiative, part of a broader effort by ICAR-KVK Hirehalli and the IIHR Experimental Farm, Hirehalli, aimed to enhance farmers’ profitability and support the sustainability of their livelihoods. The program not only benefited the producers but also promoted the consumption of locally grown jackfruits, fostering a stronger connection between farmers and consumers.
The success of this event has set a positive example, encouraging the organization of similar initiatives in the future to benefit even more farmers across the region.
